What were the Earliest Cell Phones Like?
The earliest cell phones were far from portable. In fact, the earliest cell phones were not even phones; they were radios. Mobile rigs were the first version of a portable phone. They were used in taxis and police cars as early as 1930, and eventually became popular as a way of communication among the regular population. Mobile rigs required a base station and a hand-held device, and could be used either from home, or installed in cars and boats.
The earliest cell phones to be truly portable were released by Motorola in 1973. By 1983, the DynaTAC 8000X weighed two pounds (907 g) and was about 11 inches (37.9 cm) long. "The brick," as it was known by users, sold for $3995 US Dollars (USD). It took Motorola seven years to amass a million customers. The earliest cell phones to have a true network were released in Saudi Arabia in 1981, followed a month later by a vastly superior system in the Nordic countries. The earliest cell phones were not only expensive to buy, but also to use. Companies charge a line rental fee of about $6 USD a month, plus 50 cents per minute of talking time.
In the 1990s, Second Generation Cellular (or 2G) were introduced, and smaller phones became the norm. This was possible in part because 2G phones were digital rather than analog as previous phones, which allowed for smaller batteries and more advanced technology. Analog phones also had another serious drawback: It was easy for somebody to clone the phone and charge calls to somebody else's number. It was also extremely easy to listen to private conversations using a simple scanner.

About GSM Phones
A GSM phone is a type of mobile phone that uses the Global System for Mobile Communications to send and receive phone calls. GSM is a digital standard first offered commercially in 1991 and is currently the most popular mobile phone transmission technology in the world.GSM and GSM phones have found a significant boost due to Singular Wireless becoming America's largest mobile provider. They have adopted GSM technology and promote the GSM phone's ease of use due to a swappable SIM card. Though the US still has many competing technologies, a GSM phone is the international choice. If you plan to travel frequently overseas, a GSM phone might be the wise decision.
The GSM standard uses TDMA digital technology, which allows for three different voice calls to be placed in the same time slot, rather than one call using the old analog "cell" phones. This is possible through digital compression that GSM then builds upon with the addition of encryption. A GSM phone takes up the same amount of transmission space as the old technology, but has the additional benefit of added security.
One of the great benefits of a GSM phone is the addition of a SIM card, or "Subscriber Identification Module." This little chip slips into the back of GSM phones and provides all of the users' personal information. This includes contacts and calendar information in most cases, and more importantly the subscriber's personal identification information. Having this information on removable chip enables a GSM phone user to move a SIM card between mobile phones and still receive voice calls to the same number. It also prevents user from having to re-input personal information each time a new phone is purchased. In Europe and most of Asia, GSM is the standard used by everyone. Having one technology is great, because users can simply move their chips to different phones if they travel to different countries or in most cases use the same phone. This is in contrast to the US, with so many competing standards and difficulty transferring between carriers.

What is GPRS?
GPRS is a series of functionalities that allow mobile data streaming and transfer to users of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) mobile phones. GPRS is sometimes called 2.5G, since it predates 3G but is more advanced than 2G. GPRS also boasts communication speeds of up to 115 kilobits a second, a vast improvement over the GSM standard of 9.6 kilobits a second.
A close cousin of GPRS in the technology family tree is Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE). EDGE allows higher bit transmission rates at a price of lower bandwidth available for plain old phone calls. EDGE is particularly useful as a GPRS solution for the larger data services described above, such as streaming video and video conferencing

GPRS allows multiple users to share a transmission channel by opening the transmission for transfer only when each individual user needs it. Very few users need always-on data transfer capability, so GPRS works for a vast majority of users. Such new-technology functions as Web browsing, instant messaging, and real-time email reception require intermittent data transfers and are perfect examples of the successful functionality of the kind of shared bandwidth capability that GPRS offers. This kind of shared transmission is called packet switching. GPRS also facilitates streaming video, location-based Web services, and multimedia messages. These functions involve larger, more continuous streams of data, however, and usually require the user to wait a bit longer for such data transactions to take place.
The world of mobile phones is changing, daily it seems. All the rage these days is 3G, third-generation telephony, such as mobile Web browsing and other advanced functionalities. These 3G protocols are manufactured on the building blocks of 2G technologies, which were themselves revolutionary when they began to be used widely. In between these two technologies is General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). GPRS is a necessary bridge between 2G and 3G mobile telephony technologies. GPRS also makes possible the use of laptop computers as GSM devices, operating either on satellite or WiFi Internet connections. In this way, the line between mobile phone and mobile computer is further blurred.

What is a Bluetooth Headset?
A Bluetooth headset allows a wireless connection between a headset and a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. For those who are not completely up with the advancements of technology, Bluetooth is a rather low-cost means for different devices to communicate with each other via a secure, short-range radio frequency. With this technology, up to seven connections can be made at one time, including cell phones, headsets, cameras, global positioning system (GPS) devices, printers, keyboards, handheld computers, and even Bluetooth-capable cars. Along with the term Bluetooth, which derives from the name of a 10th century Danish king who unified Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, some other catchy buzzwords developed. Bluebugging defines eavesdropping and bluesnarfing occurs when a hacker accesses a phone’s information, for example contacts stored in the phone. Bluejacking, a play on the word hijacking, involves a teasing or otherwise enticing message sent as a text message. For added security, Bluetooth devices can be secured with a code or placed in hidden mode when not in use.

Advantages and Disadvantage of Cell Phone :

ADVANTAGES
A) The main advantage of prepaid cell phones is the lack of a contract. Because you are not tied to any specific company or monthly rate, you can spend as much or as little as your budget allows. If you don't use your phone much, prepaid cell phones make a lot of sense, as you don't have to pay a fixed amount for minutes that go to waste.

B) Another good advantage of prepaid cell phones is that there is no credit check required to open an account. This is great for teenagers or for those with no credit history.

C) Prepaid cell phones don't require a deposit to open an account, unlike many other plans.

D) Prepaid cell phones are a great option for parents who want their children to have a phone but want to have control over how much they spend.

DISADVANTAGES
A) Prepaid cell phones are not free, as is the case with phones when you sign a year-long contract. This means a larger initial investment. Also, not all phone models work with prepaid plans, which means you have a limited selection on the type of phone you can use.

B) Prepaid cell phones are more expensive to use. The cost per minute is usually 2-3 times higher than the price per minute under contract plans.

C) Unless you are organized and keep track of your credit, you run the risk of running out of minutes when you most need them.
